My students have different goals: some prefer to focus on the Songwriters’ Lab, while others are Fretboard Ninjas in training. Whether you’re focused on rhythm or lead guitar, or, for that matter, composition or improvisation, a strong foundation in the areas of technique, notation, theory and fretboard navigation will help you achieve your goals.
SGMA students make music with each other as well as professional session musicians from my peer group. For any student who is already excited about learning the guitar, playing in a live setting and in a professional recording studio will ensure a rapid pace of development while keeping things fun and rewarding along the way.
“I decided to pick up guitar in my mid-fifties, and lucked into SGMA and Dan Duval to get me going.
I wanted to be the old guy with long hair who can pull out a guitar and serenade with sad and silly country songs. Dan helped me start on that journey, and also guided and cajoled me during our first year. The end result was six original songs, co-written with Dan, and recorded at the Map Room with Josh Powell. What a journey!
Dan makes music theory accessible, drives students to challenge themselves, and ultimately provides a way to amplify dreams. His talent is exceeded only by his heart. His dedication shines through his students’ accomplishments.
So, SGMA has been pretty good for me.”

“I have always wanted to play the guitar. I joined Dan’s singer/songwriter branch of his academy in September 2014. Dan continually assesses my guitar playing and listens when I mention that a chord might be causing wrist strain or other concerns. He provides several alternatives to how a chord can be played that are not only ergonomic for me, but also get you to think across the entire fret board when playing and composing tunes.
Working with Dan over the last year has given me the confidence to play guitar and sing in front of others. He provides opportunities to perform in real venues that provide a supportive and encouraging environment for students that are still new to performing. His lessons combine theory and technique, while also tailoring lessons to the goals of the student.
Dan’s easy going personality and genuine care in his student’s progress are a great combination in an instructor. As I study with Dan, I get closer to my goal of applying to music therapy school and cutting my first record. I recommend Dan for anyone that is interested in working with a supportive and knowledgeable guitar instructor.”

“I took lessons for 12 years when I was young and can only imagine where I would be today if those lessons had been with Dan. He is engaging, fun, inspiring and teaches my girls in a fashion that fosters their love of music while maintaining this incredible level of professionalism. I can give no higher referral than the one I have for Dan Duval. Dan is truly inspired by his own love of music and sharing that with the world.”
